Description
This elegant turn of the century sterling silver bowl by American silver company Dominick and Haff of New York features a the beautiful flower, high relief design of poppies. The bowl features a repeating pattern of half closed and open flowers, creating a pierced rim around the bowl. The center of the silver plate is undulated has a hand etched monogram. This is a truly remarkable example of the fine work made by Dominick and Haff. The Company was founded after the Civil War in 1868 and made very high end sterling holloware and flatware. Their bowls often take on organic designs, floral motifs; the repeating pattern motifs have crisp detail, high relief and impressive reticulated silver detail work. This plate is especially notable for its two layers of silver wall, or double wall, which required more highly skilled artisans, and results in a reppousé top with a smooth silver base. It is in great condition. On the bottom of the bowl there is the partial stamp of Dominick & Haff, but you can vaguely see the three interlinked geometric designs that are the signature marks have been worn over time. Also, a Sterling mark is visible and the number 1332, 8 in, retailer's marks. The bowl measures 8 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. It weighs 9.7 troy ounces. A remarkable example of Dominick & Haff's work. This is an essential and perfect addition a silver collection.

Dominick and Haff was founded in New York in 1872. Soon afterwards, it garnered a reputation as a pioneering creator of silver wares. The company’s success allowed it to acquire the assets of other manufacturers, including the dies of Adam & Shaw, in 1880. The firm was sold to Reed & Barton in 1928. Among its notable silver patterns are Century, Labors of Cupid, English Antique, and Rococo.
