Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous pottery bowl presenting a ring-form foot, rounded bottom, and broad flared rim over a shallow basin, all skillfully hand-glazed in hues of lavender, cobalt, marigold, seafoam green, and black on a cream-colored ground. Replete with elaborate detail, the interior is adorned with a central hexagon filled with an abstract vegetal pattern and surrounded by 6 bell-shaped motifs of phytomorphic and lattice designs. A band of undulating, stylized striations encircles the top of the rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 15.8" Diameter x 4.3" H (40.1 cm x 10.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Repaired from several pieces with restoration over break lines. Chipping to glaze on interior, as well as some abrasions throughout. Otherwise, excellent with nice craquelure to glaze.
